Here are some tips to prevent you from getting a virus on your computer:
Always have a virus protection program installed on your computer for your own safety, if you do not, you will increase your chance on getting a virus.
Do not open email attachments unless you know that person, if it is from a random someone whom you do not know, then simply just delete the email and do not look back to it.
Always make sure you have a back-up of all your files ready, so that when you get infected and your computer crashes, you can always upload that back-up to use the files again you once had on your computer.
Avoid downloading risky programs from warez/sharez forums/sites. The Pirate Bay is one of them, a lot of programs that are uploaded most likely will have a virus attached.
