The skin is an ever-changing organ that contains many specialized cells and structures. There are primarily three main layers of skin in humans. They are the Epidermis, the Dermis and the Hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue). About the 7 layers of the skin, they are the sub divisions of the epidermis and the dermis.
Epidermis : The epidermis is the outer layer of skin. The thickness of the epidermis varies in different types of skin. The epidermis contains 5 layers. They are:
5 layers of the Epidermis :-
1. Stratum Corneum : The stratum corneum is the top layer of the epidermis. It is made of dead, flat skin cells that shed about every 2 weeks.
2. Stratum Lucidum: The stratum lucidum is one of the layers of the epidermis, situated just beneath the stratum corneum and present only in the thick skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. It contains translucent eleidin that forms keratin. It is also called clear cell layer.
3. Stratum Granulosum : The stratum granulosum is a layer of the epidermis found between the stratum corneum (on the palms and soles), possibly stratum lucidum and stratum spinosum.
4. Stratum Spinosum : The stratum spinosum is one of the layers of the epidermis of oral mucosa, composed of several layers of polygonal cells. It lies on top of the stratum germinativum and beneath the stratum granulosum and contains tiny fibrils within its cellular cytoplasm. When the cells of the stratum spinosum are pulled apart, they present minute spines, called desmosomes, at their surfaces which is called prickle cell.
5. Stratum Germinativum : The stratum germinativum is the deepest layer of the 5 layers of the epidermis, which is the outer covering of skin in mammals. It consists of a single layer of tall cells lying on a basement membrane. These cells undergo rapid cell division to replenish the regular loss of skin by shedding from the surface.
Dermis : Dermis the second or middle layer of the skin that lies between the epidermis and hypodermis and is responsible for giving the skin its structural support. The dermis is comprised of two layers, the papillary dermis and the recticular dermis. the second (middle) layer of the skin that lies between the epidermis and hypodermis and is responsible for giving the skin its structural support. The dermis is comprised of two layers. They are:
1. Dermal Papillary layer : The superficial layer of the dermis raised into papillae that fit into corresponding depressions on the inner surface of the epidermis.
2. Dermal Reticular layer : The deeper layer of the dermis formed of interlacing fasciculi of white fibrous tissue.
Hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue) : The Hypodermis is a layer of fat and connective tissue that houses larger blood vessels and nerves. This layer is important is the regulation of temperature of the skin itself and the body. The size of this layer varies throughout the body and from person to person.
